Introduction:

Kṣitigarbha, also known as Dizang in Chinese, is a bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism who is revered as a protector of the dead and as a guide for those who are suffering in the realms of hell. According to tradition, Kṣitigarbha made a vow to remain in the realms of hell and to assist all beings in achieving liberation from suffering. They are often depicted in art and literature as a compassionate figure, holding a staff or other implement to assist those in need. Kṣitigarbha is revered as a symbol of compassion and as a protector of those who are suffering. They are also seen as a guardian of the underworld and as a guide for those who have passed on to the next life.
